1. Select a topic strictly within Finance specialization

Students must choose a topic that fits Finance, not HR/Marketing/Operations.
Examples of acceptable Finance domains:

· Financial performance analysis

· Working capital management

· Capital budgeting

· Investment behaviour / portfolio analysis

· Credit risk analysis

· NPAs / lending patterns

· FinTech adoption

· Cost of capital / capital structure

· Ratio analysis

· Behavioural finance

· Mutual fund performance

· Derivatives / risk management

2. Ensure the topic is researchable within the student’s resources

Ask students to check:

· Will I get data? (company data, bank data, stock market data, survey responses)

· Is it possible within 2–3 months?

· Is the scope reasonable? (Not too broad; not too tiny)

Recommended Method for Topic Selection

Step 1: Identify an area of interest in Finance

Students should list 4–5 areas they enjoy, for example:

· Banking

· Investment / Stock market

· Corporate finance

· Insurance

· Financial analytics

· Personal finance

· FinTech

Step 2: Match the interest with available data sources

A topic is only valid if data can be collected.

Examples:

Area

Possible Data Source

Banking

Bank employees/managers for interviews; RBI data

Corporate finance

Annual reports from MCA/companies

Stock market

NSE/BSE, Moneycontrol, Screener

Mutual funds

AMFI, Value Research Online

FinTech

Users (survey), app reviews

Personal finance

Student/employee surveys

Step 3: Convert the idea into a workable title

Use this simple formula:

“A Study on _________ with Reference to ________.”

Examples:

· A Study on Working Capital Management with Reference to ABC Manufacturing Ltd

· A Study on Investment Behaviour of Young Investors in Chennai City

· A Study on Credit Risk Assessment Practices in Bank X

· A Study on Mutual Fund Performance with Reference to Equity Funds (2021–2024)

Step 4: Get supervisor approval and align with PU-LCS format

According to PU-LCS guidelines:

· Topic must match specialization

· Problem statement must be clear

· Objectives must be specific

· Methodology must follow Research Methodology subject

· Data must be valid (primary/secondary)

· Scope must be manageable within the semester period

How Students Should Do Their Finance Research

PU-LCS guidelines require a proper research flow.
Here is the simplest structure you can suggest:

1. Define the Problem

Examples:

· “How efficiently does XYZ Company manage its working capital?”

· “What factors influence retail investors’ stock market decisions?”

· “How does credit scoring vary across different customer segments?”

2. Set Clear Objectives

Examples for Finance topics:

Working Capital:

· To analyse liquidity, solvency, and profitability

· To evaluate receivables, inventory, and cash cycles

Investment Behaviour:

· To study factors influencing investment decisions

· To analyse risk perception among investors

Mutual Funds:

· To compare performance using Sharpe, Treynor, and Jensen ratios

3. Decide the Methodology

a. Research Design

Descriptive / Analytical.

b. Data Type

· Primary: Interviews, questionnaires

· Secondary: Annual reports, journals, NSE data, RBI data

c. Sampling

For surveys:

· Convenience / purposive sampling

· Sample size: 80–150 (as commonly accepted in PU projects)

d. Tools of Analysis

Advise students to use:

· Ratios (profitability, liquidity, solvency)

· Trend analysis

· Correlation

· Regression

· ANOVA / t-test / Chi-square (if survey-based)

· Sharpe ratio, Treynor ratio (for mutual funds)

4. Data Collection

Students must ensure:

· Questionnaire is attached in annexure

· Company permission letter (if applicable)

· Secondary data from authenticated sources (PU guideline requirement)

5. Data Analysis & Interpretation

According to PU guidelines, the analysis must include:

· Tables

· Graphs / charts

· Interpretation in words

· Managerial implications

Students should avoid simply copying numbers — they must explain what it means.

6. Findings, Suggestions, and Conclusion

A finance project must end with:

· Clear answers to the objectives

· Key insights (ex: liquidity is weak / investors prefer safe assets)

· Practical suggestions (ex: reduce receivable days, diversify portfolio)

 Final Output Format

Students must follow:

1. Cover page

2. Bonafide certificate

3. Acknowledgment

4. Table of contents

5. Chapters

Introduction

Company / Industry profile

Objectives

Methodology

Analysis & interpretation

Summary of findings

Suggestions

Conclusion

6. Bibliography

7. Annexure (questionnaire, raw data)

How to Identify Whether a Project is Finance-Based (vs Marketing / HR / Logistics)

A project is classified based on what it measures, what tools it uses, and what the objectives are — not on the company or industry alone.

Below is the simplest and most reliable method used in universities like PU / PU-LCS.

A Project Is Finance-Based If…

1. The Research Problem is Financial in Nature

The core question must relate to:

· Money flows

· Investments

· Returns

· Capital structure

· Financial risks

· Working capital

· Budgeting

· Cost of capital

· Financial performance

· Valuation

Examples of financial research problems:

· “How efficiently is XYZ Company using its working capital?”

· “What factors influence investment behaviour among millennial investors?”

· “What is the credit risk profile of MSME customers in ABC Bank?”

These are clearly financial, not marketing or HR.

2. The Objectives Focus on Financial Variables

Finance objectives include:

· To analyse profitability

· To evaluate liquidity / solvency / leverage

· To measure risk and return

· To estimate capital structure

· To assess working capital efficiency

· To study loan performance / NPAs

· To compare mutual fund performance

If objectives are like this → Finance Project.

3. The Tools and Techniques Used Are Financial Tools

Finance projects use:

· Ratio analysis

· Trend analysis

· Working capital analysis

· Capital budgeting tools (NPV, IRR)

· Sharpe, Treynor, Jensen ratios

· Beta calculation

· Portfolio analysis

· Credit scoring models

· Risk analysis (VaR, SD, CV)

Marketing/HR projects will never use these tools.

4. The Data Collected is Financial Data

Finance data includes:

· Balance sheets

· P&L statements

· Cash flow statements

· Stock prices

· Mutual fund NAVs

· Loan/credit data

· Financial ratios

· Investment behaviour surveys

If the data is mainly numbers or financial documents → Finance.

5. The Outcome Provides Financial Decisions or Recommendations

Examples:

· Improve liquidity

· Reduce working capital cycle

· Improve credit appraisal

· Optimize investment portfolios

· Enhance profitability

· Reduce risk exposure

If final suggestions are financial → Finance Project.

Not Finance-Based If the Following Are Present

If the focus is on…

Marketing Projects

· Consumer behaviour

· Brand preference

· Customer satisfaction

· Digital marketing

· Market segmentation

· Promotion effectiveness

· Advertisement perception

HR Projects

· Employee motivation

· Job satisfaction

· Training effectiveness

· Work-life balance

· Performance appraisal

· Organizational culture

· Stress management

Logistics / SCM Projects

· Supply chain efficiency

· Inventory management (operational perspective)

· Warehouse optimization

· Transportation planning

· Logistics cost analysis

Simple 1-Line Rule You Can Tell Students

“If your project discusses money, financial ratios, returns, budgeting, investments, or financial risks — it is Finance.

If it discusses people → HR
If it discusses customers → Marketing
If it discusses movement of goods → Logistics”

Examples: How to Classify Borderline Topics

Sample Topic

Finance

Liquidity, current assets/liabilities, cash cycle

Consumer Perception of Digital Banking Apps

Marketing

Focus on perception, satisfaction, usage

Financial Stress Among Employees

HR

Focus on employees, workplace factors

Inventory Management Practices

Logistics / Operations

Use This Checklist to Approve Finance Topics

“Your topic is Finance only if you score YES for at least 4 out of 5.”

Condition

Yes / No

1. The problem is financial (profit, liquidity, risk, investment)

2. The objectives are financial

3. Tools used are financial (ratios, beta, NPV, etc.)

4. Data is financial (annual reports, NAV, stock prices)

5. Findings give financial insights

If YES = Finance Project
If NO = Redirect to Marketing/HR/Logistics appropriate area.
