The Research Process

 

1. Identify and Define the Problem

Everything starts with a doubt, a gap, or a curiosity.
You refine it into a clear research problem or question.
Example: “How is AI changing student learning in Arts and Science colleges?”

2. Review of Literature

You explore what experts already discovered.
Books, journals, government reports, archived data… you dig in.
This step helps you sharpen your ideas and avoid repetition.

3. Set Objectives and Form Hypotheses

You decide what exactly you are going to achieve.
Hypotheses are predictions that can be tested scientifically.
Example: “Students have a positive perception of AI in learning.”

4. Research Design

This is your master plan.
You choose the type of research: descriptive, exploratory, causal etc.

5. Selecting Research Methods

Pick your tools of data collection: surveys, interviews, observation, experiments etc.
This is where you think practically.

6. Sampling Design

You cannot study everyone.
So you decide whom to select, how many, and how:
random sampling, stratified sampling, convenience sampling etc.

7. Data Collection

Get into the field.
Collect primary data (fresh data) or secondary data (already available data).
Consistency and accuracy matter big-time here.

8. Data Processing and Analysis

You organize data into tables, graphs, charts.
Then apply:
• statistical tools for quantitative studies
• thematic coding for qualitative studies
This is where the story hidden inside numbers and words comes alive. 

9. Interpretation of Results

Explain what the findings actually mean.
Do they support your hypotheses?
How do they relate to earlier studies?

10. Report Writing and Presentation

You write a structured research report:
introduction, methodology, findings, conclusions, suggestions, references.
This is your final voice, confident and complete.

11. Verification and Follow-up (Optional but smart)

Your study might inspire new questions or lead to further projects.
Research is never truly “done.” It evolves.

Research Design 

Picture this as the blueprint of your entire study.
It answers: How am I going to conduct this research from start to finish?

It includes decisions about:
• What type of study is this? (descriptive, exploratory, experimental etc.)
• Who or what am I studying? (population, sample)
• How will I collect data? (survey, interview, observation etc.)
• How will I analyze the data? (statistical methods, thematic analysis etc.)

Basically, research design is your master plan.

Research Method 

This is about the specific tools or techniques you choose for data collection.

For example:
• Surveys
• Interviews
• Case studies
• Experiments
• Focus groups
• Observation

Research methods are the “doing part” of your design.

Research Methodology 

This goes one layer deeper.
It explains the philosophy and reasoning behind your choices.

It answers:
Why did I choose this method?
How does this approach help me answer my research questions?
• What is the underlying worldview? (positivism, interpretivism etc.)

Methodology justifies your entire process.
It shows that your approach is logical, credible, and academically sound.
